What it's like to play with me as a DM

Read this if you're interested in playing in a game I am DMing, either IRL or online.

The Rules I Use When I DM

I like my fantasy games a little more realistic, so when I DM, these are the rules I like to use. Each game may vary a little, depending on the circumstances, so check the specific game for more. I really do get that fun is more important than realistic, so I try to strike a balance. YMMV. Also included are clarifications to RAW rules I think people get wrong a lot.

• Concurrent Initiative (as opposed to normal, cyclical Initiative)
• Ability (Skill) Checks (much discussion at the link)
  • You do not (generally) have to be proficient in a skill to make a check
  • Critical failures or successes (rolling a 1 or a 20) have no effect on Ability (Skill) checks
  • Passive scores (including Passive Perception) do not result in automatically successful checks
  • But, passive scores can supplant active checks given enough time
  • You cannot retry a failed Ability (Skill) check until after a Long Rest
  • Find traps/secret doors is (almost always) Perception, and disarming/unlocking requires Thieves' Tools (this is RAW)
• Critical Misses scale down with level
• Targeting is possible, but incurs disadvantage
• True Strike spell is line of sight
• Wild Magic is better when the player is not in charge
• Natural healing is slow (not yet implemented in a game)

• Additional rules/clarifications I am considering:
  • Rules for butchering for food
  • Rules for butchering for valuable bits
  • Horses can trigger attacks of opportunity, but their riders do not (but if triggered, attacker can choose horse or rider to attack) (this is RAW)
